SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE
Smith Mountain Lake, located in Virginia, was created between 1960 and 1963 by the construction of the Smith Mountain Dam on the Roanoke River. The project, undertaken by Appalachian Power Company, transformed the area from farmland and rocky gorges into a picturesque 40-mile-long lake covering 22,000 acres with 500 miles of shoreline. Initially, the primary goal was electricity generation, but the lake has since become a major recreational destination.
Today, Smith Mountain Lake offers a wide array of activities for visitors. Water enthusiasts can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, standup paddleboarding, and jet skiing.
